Morocco Protests Spains Ambassador Visit To Ceuta

Morocco Protests Spain's Ambassador Visit to Ceuta

Tensions Rise Over Disputed Territory

Madrid and Rabat at Odds

Tensions between Morocco and Spain have escalated after the Spanish ambassador to Morocco visited the disputed territory of Ceuta, prompting a formal protest from the Moroccan government. The visit on Thursday, 23 February 2023, by Ambassador Jose Maria Alvarado drew a strong reaction from Rabat, which considers Ceuta and the neighboring enclave of Melilla to be occupied Spanish territory.

The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Spanish ambassador to express its "disapproval and rejection" of the visit, calling it a "provocative act" that "harms confidence and mutual trust" between the two countries. The ministry also warned that such actions could "have negative consequences" for bilateral relations.

Spain's Foreign Ministry responded by saying that the ambassador's visit was "within the framework of his duties" and that the Spanish government "respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Morocco." However, the ministry also stressed the importance of "maintaining dialogue and cooperation" with Morocco.

The dispute over Ceuta and Melilla has been a source of tension between Morocco and Spain for decades. Morocco claims that the enclaves are part of its territory and has repeatedly called for their return. Spain, however, maintains that Ceuta and Melilla have been part of Spain for centuries.

The latest incident comes amid a period of heightened tensions between Morocco and Spain. In May 2022, Spain allowed the leader of the Polisario Front, a group seeking independence for the Western Sahara, to enter Spain for medical treatment. This prompted Morocco to recall its ambassador to Spain for consultations.

The situation in Ceuta and Melilla is complex and there is no easy solution. Both sides have legitimate claims to the territory and both have deep historical ties to the region. It is important for both countries to find a way to resolve the dispute peacefully and through dialogue.
